Speaking in my own personal experience being a student at a school that uses NetSweeper, I've managed to form a rather complex opinion on the software itself, but I'll keep it short and sweet. NetSweeper is perhaps the best Internet Filtering software, mostly because of it's ability to analyze and block innapropriate websites it has missed the first time the site is opened. If one manages to access a website that should be blocked but isn't, it WILL be blocked the next time it is opened. A great tool for Schools and Home users. My main critisizm though, is that it is far too strict. Many resources for information is blocked by NetSweeper for various reasons that never come up, forcing school research to be done on Wikipedia (which is usually not allowed in most high schools in the Halifax Regional School Board). It also blocks sites that, while not nessaccarily educational, are required more more specific classes. I'll show you what I mean. I take classes that teach animation and web design. One such animation uses Sprite Sheets, but all Sprite Sheet sites are blocked. Also, sites that give tutorials for Adobe Flash (which is a big program in these Multimedia courses) are also blocked, leaving students and teachers with little to no resources to work with, resulting in subpar teaching. Over all, I really like the IDEA behind the program, but maybe some scaling back in how strict it is could use some work, and perhaps an interface on a blocked page which allows students to send a little message to the school board to give a reason why a blocked site should be unblocked.
