Kirtida and Hitesh migrated to Canada in 2004, with big dreams of success in Canada, a totally new world for them. Kirtida worked in banking for her first few years living in Canada. After the 2008 recession, her husband, Hitesh, lost his job as a machine operator and the couple decided to explore new horizons to support the family.
Despite having no experience in the food industry, they decided to start a small, home-based catering business in 2008.
Kirtida had only cooked for her family, but Hitesh had a natural talent for detecting the spices and ingredients used in dishes by taste. Before starting their kitchen, they both tried various restaurants and dishes to understand which flavours they loved. What followed was many late nights together, cooking the same curries over and over again to find the perfect recipe. Together, they created their own recipes, carefully making sure that tasti ng each dish would transport the diner to all the flavourful places in India.
Without any previous experience, advertisement or financial support, it was rainy days for the family. Nurturing a new business while starting a family was incredibly challenging, so the restaurant dreams were put on hold while Kirtida and Hitesh welcomed a new baby in 2010.
In 2012 while visiting Guelph’s Farmer’s Market, they saw a need for authentic, fresh Indian food in the community. Kirtida and Hitesh decided to resume the business with renewed love and passion. 2017 was the real beginning of Kirtida Kitchen, as they established their first stand-alone restaurant. The couple has never looked back since. Today, Kirtida Kitchen is the fastest growing catering and take-out restaurant, not just in Guelph but in the GTA as well.
